Original Beans Piura Porcelana 75%

This chocolate is organic and vegan. That might be enough to awake the interest of some, but my attention was cought by the word Porcelana, the white cocoa beans, as they also are called. I've been pretty pleased with some Porcelana chocolates in the past, so my expectations are high. In fact, the first dark chocolate ever to taste good in my mouth, was Amedei Porcelana.

The package is primarily dark grey, but has a pink/purple highlighting color in some places, which certainly makes the grey less dull. While opening the cardboard packaging I'm overjoyed with how easy it is to open. I've seen some pretty weird stuff as chocolate bar opening mechanics go, but this opens up as easily as a chocolate bar should. The bar is packaged in what looks like tin foil (silver colored, you know), but is most likely something else. Added on December 11th: Received word from Original Beans saying that the "tin foil" is actually made of wood!

The aroma is great! It's certainly dark chocolate, but it also has strong aromas of something fruity. Might it be the lime they mentioned? It might also be cherry. Since this is dark chocolate, there is of course bitterness as well, which leads me to expect powerful flavours in the taste.

I love smooth and almost slippery chocolate and this is certainly that. I also l-o-v-e knowing, that the smoothness has been acomplished without adding lecithin or any other crap into the chocolate. Cocoa butter has worked its wonders here. If cotton in itself wasn't such a dry product, I would say that this feels like a mix of cotton and clouds in my mouth.

The package (or the producer) promises luscious notes of lime, raspberry and toasted nuts. And oh my goodness, does it deliver! Just like the aroma suggested, there is a powerful all around general cocoa taste, but at the same time there is delightful fruityness. I might easily agree with the raspeberry taste, but I don't really get a distinct lime taste. However, I get the same cherry that I got in the aroma. There is definetly some bitterness in the chocolate, make no mistake about it, but it goes really well together with the fruityness. If you  could call a chocolate happily mysterious, this would be it. I like this a lot.

There is bitterness also in the aftertaste, but there are also many other flavours. There is fruityness, just like in the flavour when eating the chocolate. The bitterness is the stronger party of these two, but as there is good and bad bitterness in chocolates, I'm happy to say that this is the good kind.

Ingredients: Cacao beans, cacao butter & raw cane sugar

Suklaan tuoksu on mahtava!

Amedei Porcelana is my favourite. If this one is 9.15, what rating would you give the Amedei Porcelana? Atb/Layjay

Hi Layjay! I can't answer your question accuratly, since I last tasted Amedei Porcelana in 2008. I reviewed it then on the Finnish Chocolate Society website and gave it a 4/5, but the review was written at a time that I didn't like dark chocolates. Unfortunatly we'll never see Amedei Porcelana reviewed in this blog since it contains vanilla, and is therefore out of this blog's scope.

Ok, I have to take back the part about never seeing Amedei in this blog, since I just realized I have reviewed Michel Cluizel Los Anconés 67% which also contains vanilla...
